  • Zahn Cup Viscometer ()

    A Zahn cup is a viscosity measurement device widely used in the paint industry. It is commonly a stainless steel cup with a tiny hole drilled in the center of the bottom of the cup. There is also a long handle attached to the sides. There are five cup specifications, labeled Zahn cup ‪#‎x‬, where x is the number from one through five. Large number cup sizes are used when viscosity is high, while low number cup sizes are used when viscosity is low.
    To determine the viscosity of a liquid, the cup is dipped and completely filled with the substance. After lifting the cup out of the substance the user measures the time until the liquid streaming out of it breaks up, this is the corresponding "efflux time".
    On paint standard specifications, one denotes viscosity in this manner: efflux time, Zahn cup number.
    Conversion
    One can convert efflux time to kinematic viscosity by using an equation for each cup specification number, where t is the efflux time and ν is the kinematic viscosity in centistokes.

     DRAWDOWN BARS-RODS give users the ability to fine-tune coating thickness quickly and easily, without altering the chemistry of their coating material, and without time-consuming and expensive changeovers.
    For users that require a coating path of up to 12", use the standard Laboratory Drawdown Rods (N008-005 choose 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2") . With an overall length of 16",. 
    Drawdown Rods (N008-026, N008-026A) are designed for users producing test samples up to 8½" wide. These stainless steel rods are 4" shorter than conventional lab rods and offer an additional savings. 
    Wet coating thickness can be accurately predicted within one tenth of a mil (.0001"). Rod selection tables allow coaters to consider coat weight and percent of solids in choosing the proper rod size for each production run.
    Bottom-line profits have encouraged many coaters to modify existing machines, in order to take advantage of the flexibility, the ease of use and the dollar savings associated with rod coating. 
    The market for wire-wound rods has grown rapidly during the past few decades, because they provide predictable, accurate coatings time after time, at a minimal cost. Although the technology goes back almost a century, today's high quality materials, multi-wire designs and special wire surfaces have made this system more popular than ever before.
    Wire-wound rods were first used in coating machines built by Charles Mayer in the 1900's to manufacture waxed paper and carbon paper. They are still called "Mayer Bars" by many coaters. 
    Machined Lab Rods (N008-056, 057 & 058) are less expensive due to a different manufacturing process and all of these are 16" long with a coating path width of 12". 
    ROD SIZE NOTES:
    To determine approximate wet film thickness in Mils for a specific rod number from the table below, multiply the rod number by 0.10. For example, the number 3 rod would be 3 x 0.10 = 0.30 Mils. The number 20 rod would be 20 x 0.10 = 2.0 Mils.
    For Microns, multiply rod number by 2.54. For example the number 3 rod would be 3 x 2.54 = 7.62 Microns.

    TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO USE SURFACE TENSION / WET ABILITY TESTER

    OBJECTIVE OF TEST
    Wetting test as measured by this test show treatment level achieved by the surface of plastic film or substrate, which has been treated electrically or other means [or wet ability of non treated surface] to get satisfactory print or coating adhesion or anchoring
    This quality control test, is highly recommended for printing Coating and plastic blow molding industries
    Each test fluid gives an accurate means of surface tension level in terms of dynes/cms when applied to the surface to be tested
     
    Test procedure
    Lay the specimen to be tested on a clean flat surface with treated side on the top transparent films should be kept on the top of white paper for better visibility of marking spread the test fluid or ink from the felt tip of test pen lightly over an area of 7 cms² of the test specimen (i.e. strip of 7 cams x 1cms). Note time taken for continuous film on ink to break into droplets. And not peripheral shrinkage. (border shrinkage ).
    Wetting is satisfactory or adequate ,when a continuous film of test fluid remains intact 3 seconds or more on the substrate to be tested .breaking of the ink film into droplets, in less than 3 seconds indicate a lack of wetting and a lower numbered test fluid to be tried. if the ink film remains intact for more than 3 seconds . The surface tension of this ink in dynes/cm “wetting tension” and these values are already marked on each of these pens/bottles.
    Please note that observations of the liquid film behavior should be made in the center of the liquid film. Shrinkage of the liquid film on the edges of the applied ink does not necessarily indicate a lack of wetting. Breaking of liquid film into droplets within 2 seconds, indicate lack of wetting this is especially true for substrate having treatment level above - 40 dynes cams ²
    Some experience with this will give excellent insight, to enable an accurate reading to be made. Extreme care must be ensure the film or substrate is not touched or contaminated in the area of lest.
    It is recommended that when testing is done during the production, the test fluid or ink to be applied across the full web width.

    Special instructions to avoid erroneous readings:
     
    This is a delicate test, users should observe following instructions carefully otherwise the test result will be erratic/inconclusive or users may conclude that the TESTER is faulty.
    Erratic of inconclusive readings are observed under following testing conditions :
    Inconsistent (corona) treatment on the substrate may result in erratic readings.
    Loss of treatment or surface wetting tension due to repeated winding/unwinding of the material or due to friction on the machine may give erratic readings.
    Contamination due to dust or frequent handling of the treated material may also give erratic or inconclusive results. Therefore it is advisable to perform  test on fresh (untouched) samples.
    Insufficient fluid (test ink) in the working pens, insufficient fluid at the tips of the pens. Resulting in error. Therefore if testing is done after a long gap, please hold the test pens upside down for few seconds so that fluid flows down to the tips of the pen. As the fluid at the tip is exposed to atmosphere there is possibility of erroneous reading, therefore please dispense this exposed fluid by marking a few lines on white paper. This is only if pens are used after long storage (more then one month)
    If treatment level of material is 40 dynes/cm or more, all the pen stains from 32 dynes/ cm to 40 dynes/cm will look alike i.e. All the stains will appear uniform and unbroken, and the user may conclude that the tester is faulty. Please read point no. 3 of test procedure once again, i.e. do not count peripheral shrinkage as lack of wetting.

    Steel doctor blades used to be a printer’s only option to produce high-end graphics. It wasn’t because he didn’t want longer blade life and the safety benefits that came with using plastic, steel was simply the only material that could sufficiently meter a high line screen roll. Not anymore! Today’s next generation polymers and advanced tip engineering have at last resulted in a non-metallic doctor blade with the metering quality of steel. This blade can replace steel doctor blades in a full range of flexo printing applications from solids and lines, to reverses and fine print, to screens and process work. Here’s why.

    Steel Doctor Blades vs. Traditional Plastic
    Due to its thinness and stiffness, steel has been the only blade material that could achieve a fine point of contact sufficient to execute a clean wipe on a high line screen anilox roll. By comparison, the characteristics of traditional plastic doctor blades require them to be thicker to provide the same rigidity. While they have other benefits in terms of safety and blade life, their thickness prevents them from maintaining a fine contact area with the anilox. As they wear and their contact area with the anilox roll grows, plastic blades produce changes in tonal value and dot gain when metering high line screens. For this reason they have historically been limited to jobs with low to modest graphics requirements.
    Next Generation Polymers
    Now, specially formulated polymer doctor blades can compete with steel in the most demanding graphics applications. Unlike traditional plastic, the stiffness of the next generation material with a precisely engineered Micron edge allows the blades to achieve and maintain a fine contact area with the anilox roll. They can deliver effective metering on line screens up to 2,000 lpi (785 L/cm) and produce graphics of the highest quality. The following diagrams compare the contact areas of traditional plastic, steel and next generation polymer blades:


    Doctor Blade Contact Area Comparison

    As shown, the contact area of a worn traditional plastic blade grows to .060″ (1.52mm) compared to a contact area of .016″ (.40mm), for a worn steel blade. The next generation polymer is able to maintain a contact area of .012″ (.305mm), equal to or smaller than that of most steel doctor blades, throughout the life of the blade due to the edge design. The engineered tip wears slowly and evenly and delivers consistent ink film thickness for the duration of the print job.
    Today’s innovations in polymer doctor blades offer printers a viable alternative to steel. A combination of advanced materials and new tip technology has yielded a blade that meters as well as steel on the highest line screens yet retains the benefits of traditional plastic. Printers no longer have to compromise on anilox scoring, blade life, and safety to fulfill the most demanding graphics requirements

    One such use is standardizing colors in the CMYK process. The CMYK process is a method of printing color by using four inks—cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. A majority of the world's printed material is produced using the CMYK process, and there is a special subset of Pantone colors that can be reproduced using CMYK .[citation needed] Those that are possible to simulate through the CMYK process are labeled as such within the company's guides.

    However, most of the Pantone system's 1,114 spot colors cannot be simulated with CMYK but with 13 base pigments (14 including black) mixed in specified amounts.[6]

    The Pantone system also allows for many special colors to be produced, such as metallics and fluorescents. While most of the Pantone system colors are beyond the printed CMYK gamut, it was only in 2001 that Pantone began providing translations of their existing system with screen-based colors. (Screen-based colors use the RGB color model—red, green, blue—system to create various colors.[7]) The Goe system has RGB and LAB values with each color.[8]

    Pantone colors are described by their allocated number (typically referred to as, for example, "PMS 130"). PMS colors are almost always used in branding and have even found their way into government legislation and military standards (to describe the colors of flags and seals).[9] In January 2003, the Scottish Parliament debated a petition (reference PE512) to refer to the blue in the Scottish flag as "Pantone 300". Countries such as Canada and South Korea and organizations such as the FIA have also chosen to refer to specific Pantone colors to use when producing flags. U.S. states including Texas have set legislated PMS colors of their flags.[10] It has also been used in an art project by the Brazilian photographer Angelica Dass[11] which applies Pantone to the human skin color spectrum

    Hegman gauge, sometimes referred to as a grind gauge or grindometer, is a device used to determine how finely ground the particles of pigment (or other solid) dispersed in a sample of paint (or other liquid) are. The gauge consists of a steel block with a series of very small parallel grooves machined into it. The grooves decrease in depth from one end of the block to the other, according to a scale stamped next to them. A typical Hegman gauge is 170mm by 65mm by 15mm, with a channel of grooves running lengthwise, 12.5mm across and narrowing uniformly in depth from 100 μm to zero.

    [1]A Hegman gauge is used by puddling a sample of paint at the deep end of the gauge and drawing the paint down with a flat edge along the grooves. The paint fills the grooves, and the location where a regular, significant "pepperyness" in the appearance of the coating appears, marks the coarsest-ground dispersed particles.[1] The reading is taken from the scale marked next to the grooves, in dimensionless "Hegman units" and/or mils or micrometres

    [2]Determining the fineness of a paint's grind is important, because too coarse a grind may reduce the paint's color uniformity, gloss, and opacity.[3] The Hegman gauge is widely used for this purpose because it requires minimal skill and only a few seconds' work.

    The Ford viscosity cup is a simple gravity device that permits the timed flow of a known volume of liquid passing through an orifice located at the bottom. Under ideal conditions, this rate of flow would be proportional to the kinematic viscosity (expressed in stokes and centistokes) that is dependent upon the specific gravity of the draining liquid. However, the conditions in a simple flow cup are seldom ideal for making true measurements of viscosity. It is important when using a Ford Cup and when retesting liquids that the temperature of the cup and the liquid is maintained, as ambient temperature makes a significant difference to viscosity and thus flow rate.

    The original Ford Cup was based on Imperial (US) measurement of the aperture.
